A sommelier (pronounced suh-mel-yay) is a wine manager, also known as a knowledgeable wine professional, usually working in upscale restaurants. There are several routes one can take. This includes expanding your knowledge of wine and wine service by working in a top wine bar or restaurant and getting a job, so to speak. Of course, there are official qualifications that will get you off to a good start, such as:
Professional certificate from the World Association of Sommeliers (WSA)
Certified Sommelier Course: An internationally recognized diploma that will allow you to work anywhere in the world
Diploma in Hospitality and Management
There is even a master sommelier course that you can complete after a few years of experience. It is a very elite club with only about 270 worldwide.
However, apparently extensive knowledge of wine and vineyards, winery management and inventory control, understanding how to properly serve wine at the right temperature, who should be served first at the table etc.
Becoming a good wine sommelier requires exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to treat each guest as if they were a private guest in their home. You must be approachable and a good listener.
